I've been digging into 17th and 18th century portraits the past couple of days, and just can't get enough. I'm in love with this portrait of Mrs. James Denham by Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1789. Check out Historical Portraits if you're into this kind of thing... it's a great resource for British historical portraiture, especially from this era.

My favorite classes in college were art history. The portraits are so full of history. I wonder what is behind the face and what their lives were all about. What happened right before the painting? Right after? Was the painting a true representation or did the artist paint his perspective? So much to ponder...
